Password protected preferences in OOo4Kids 0.9

One of the
OOo4Kids 0.9 new feature is the
password protected preferences.
Principles :Children love experiment. Most of them have good skills for that, but this is not what the teacher expects :-) So, the goal of this feature, is to implement, intelligently, a protection for the preferences, who :
* avoids the children to modify something
* but allow them to click, and see whatever they want (in read only mode)
Important :
this feature is only a protection to avoid children hacking the OOo4Kids, but not a security (the password is readable in Common.xcu)
The Rules :
*
The default password, if enabled, is : prof*
By default, the preferences are unlocked* To activate the protection, one just need to click on the "Click to avoid modifications" Image button (the green padlock).
=>
Be carefull : the protection will be validated once the dialog box will be closed, and this change is not reversible Means once activated, you'll need the password to disable that.
The views :
*
A green padlock displayed on the bottom of the view, means : unlocked preferences
*
A red padlock displayed on the bottom of the view, means : locked preferences
Disable the protection :
Change the password
Attention : the toolbars will stay customizable. The feature was made on behalf of teachers, and in collaboration with them. Th code will be fully documented (I started already) at the
Password protected preferences wiki page, and of course, if ever something can be reused in Openoffice.org, I'd be glad to provide patches (no idea whether it will interest anybody though)

OOo4kids provided as .deb archives

Yesterday, I finally figured out what was wrong with the upstream packaging, and the .deb we build install fine and can be deinstalled fine too. Just follow
the instructionsThe problem is, the upstream way of .deb is not the right one, and
Jose Luis Redrejo who kindly helped me, suggested to return to the right Debian way.
One big issue, e.g., is that if you want to install Writer only, this is unclear with the current dependencies scheme, and needs to be seriously improved. Other issue, is there are not "Section" and "Priority" sections in the existing control file.
So, this must be changed, and we agreed to use the upstream way until 1.0 output, and then change for the real Debianization just after 1.0 is out (current milestone in progress is 0.9)
Experimental packages can be provided on demand. Either ask us the info by email, or (better) ask on IRC.
Last but not least : .rpm will follow soon if we find a volunteer.

OOo4Kids 0.8 : new Star Center

One more time, thanks to
Ben Bois who created a new great background for the future version (0.8) of
OOo4Kids :

The
shapes of the buttons are
no longer apparent, and when you
roll over one of them, a help balloon explains you which application will open. Of course, things are not perfect, and we still have some bugs to fix, but this is very promising !! (and my children love it ;-)
More information about the
recent changes IMPORTANT : the version proposed for download (0.6) below does NOT have the feature yet. The new splashscreen should be integrated in the version : 0.8, not before. => Download.ooo4Kids.org websiteIf you want to help us, to find resource and contribute back to improve OpenOffice.org, via the OpenOffice.org Education Project,

OOo4Kids is a 7-12 years children Office suite, based on OpenOffice.org ( http://www.openoffice.org ) source code. This means OpenOffice.org has some features OOo4Kids has not (like Base and Java). And if you need those features, please use OpenOffice.org, that you can download at :

Education Project mailing list reactivation

Below, the mail I sent to several mailing lists.
After two years of an intense activity of the french part of the education.openoffice.org project, we are ready to reactivate this international list : this is one of our objectives for 2010 !!
To subscribe, just send a mail at : users-subscribe@education.openoffice.org confirm, and that's all : you can start contributing to the Education Project !!
To become a member, please follow the instructions provided there : http://education.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectMemberList
Education Project aims to create a bridge between Educational World and OpenOffice.org Project, following 3 axes :
- create a network of teachers, using OpenOffice.org
- provide a sharing area
- provide new developers, and spread OpenOffice.org source code (teach OOo source code and coding guidelines, UNO, an so on)
Currently, this project counts around 110 members, but everybody is welcome, and there is so much to do, that any contribution is wamrly welcome too !!
Everybody is welcome : teachers, students, just curious :)For the one willing to help us, we need people able to help us for the website, translate, manage the wiki, but not only (the list is not limited).
Other need is to compare, work together (collaborative work), and concatenate informations providing from several educational systems, and of course, share our knowledge.
Be welcome, and Seasonal Greatings to all of you !!

OOo4Kids : 13rd August changes ...

Since two days, I was working hard to implement a simple request: add a menu entry, to be able to check for the license content.
The idea is to provide soon a public version. of OOo4KidsFor the one interested, I started to document everything I did in the code on an
OOo4Kids wiki page. See
License dialog page . This is work in progress, and currently, 25% of the changes is written, but I'll update asap.
Below, some screenshots :
The first screenshot is the new background for the
mounted image disk. We respected
Christian Lohmaier (aka cloph) request, and
Ben Bois did a great work (I really like this new one)
The second screenshot is the frame you see when installing :
The third screenshot is the implementation of the menu entry
"License ...". This way, no need to ask the user to read or do whatever at install, but the license will be abailable from everywhere. Simple and efficient.
The fourth screenshot is what you see when you click on
"Licence ...". This is simply the about box I reused for the new feature. As you can see, there is still a bug, because the title is not correct, but I expect to solve that soon (please contact me if you have an idea).
... last but not least, the last one is what you can read when you hit CTRL SDT (or CMD+SDT on Mac OS X : the list of the people who contributed or helped to the OOo4Kids code (partial list there, in alphabetical order). As you can see, some formating is mandatory (sentence too long). But that's the beginning :-)

OOo4Kids : last changes

All the recent changes are given on our wiki. Just see
the changelogs)In the list, there is a new background icon, for the mounted image disk, on Mac OS X. As
Christian Lohmaier suggested, the butterflies showing where drop the application, are bigger than the application itself, and
Ben Bois, who designed this background, will have a look asap.

But what is important to me, what that
Abdelkader Bellabes and
Thomas Fontenay (both from
Epitech Paris) are now able to build (both OpenOffice.org and OOo4Kids),
AND debug on both Windows and Linux, and (in the air) on Sugar now. For example, we traced with Thomas, and finally found a solution (not completely solved yet), together a possible crash with copy-paste.
So, now, we'll be able to start with profiling : Thomas on Linux, Abdelkader on Windows, and me an all possible OS's.
Our first plan, will be to play with the famous generic.ppt (does not work well, good stress for Impress), and analyze everything: first, to learn how Impress works, during presentations, and second, to search what happens, and what can cause slow downs, in some situations. Means pedagogical purpose first, but not only.
Work in progress: with
Thorsten Behrens, we are making a point on the project with people from
Ecole Centrale Nantes, to see what can be or not integrated. (to be continued)

Today, I was glad to see

Cedric will help a lot with that.
Of course, there are
#dev.openoffice.org and
#go-oo IRC channels (and some other), but the idea is to use a dedicated channel, to avoid boring developers with simple and often-the-same questions.
Something ideal could be to have dedicated hours where students could find the developers they need. e.g. defining a list, or sort of agenda on the wiki. Shouldn't be too difficult, but we need volunteers ...

Many thanks to
Daniel Watson, who wrote this new feature, and I would like to mention the great support from
Kohei Yoshida, another OpenOffice.org developer from Novell, who is a Calc expert.
From my side, I welcomed Daniel . Since two days, we work together, (
mostly on the #education.openoffice.org IRC channel ), to avoid bothering other devs, with basic questions, like explaining the build process, how to debug, rebuild including symbols, how to improve the code (like respect the coding guidelines .. and son on), and I fixed some builds issues with him ( + I started the code review ). The biggest issue we encountered was a dark visibility issue, but SC_DLLPUBIC macro helped to solve that.
To illustrate the great work Daniel did (mostly alone !!), better use screenshots :-)
Please note, I used Mac OS X Aqua version for the screenshots, but it should work the same way on all portsThe first one describes how we can set the color of the tabs :

The next illustrates the result :

Yet another example :
Now what ?Of course, the road is long before integration, but Daniel created a

OpenOffice.org meets Seneca College

If you look at the list of
potential projects proposed to
Seneca College ( Toronto, Canada) students, you'll see there is a link ( will be updated soon) to the
OpenOffice.org Education Project Effort.
This is just a link at the moment, because we'll have to adapt and do some cleanup the proposed projects to the need.
From our side, we propose , with an -as precise as possible- frame, and well defined goals, little Projects for one or two students working as a binom. If you want to compare, Seneca introduces the projects to students the
potential projects way.
How things happened ?
Seneca College has students, and has so close relationship with
Mozilla. Recently, it was decided to join other Communities, to make the Seneca College participation in it grow.
From our side the OpenOffice.org needs volunteers, and developers
The idea is to propose the students, e.g. fixing a little bug, or writing a little feature for OpenOffice.org. At the end, if everything is successfull, validate the content.
The actors now :Fardad Souleimanloo,
Chris Tyler, and
David Humphrey, all Professors at Seneca College, were presented to me.
Louis Suarez Potts, the OOo Community manager was invited too, and during an IRC meeting, where , we completed the presentations, discussed and explained more about our respective expectations.
Fardad will join our Team, and we'll work together.
To continue the Effort, I am preparing new subjects ( ~10 ) for students, and I'll add them to the existing list.
Waiting, volunteers are welcome to help us to prepare as much as possible of projects, and have Fun writing code (this is what I prefer to be honest :))
I expect great news soon. Stay tuned :)

Imagining courses to "teach" OpenOffice.org source code

Imagine it becomes possible to organize courses, to
teach OpenOffice.org Project and Source code to students. Crazy idea, but why not ?
Currently, we do provide applications, but maybe we'll need to improve the list.
How to evaluate and validate the formation ? Of course, it will be tricky to find all the mentors, but why not dream ? :)
Starting point: the student chooses a project himself (better be motivated )
Rule: no change by default. Once choosen, the student must go, and manage his project,
validating milestones.What could be those
"milestones" ? Below, just a draft:
To validate : 0.1
discover the OpenOffice.org Project (needs to be better defined)
basics with mailing lists,
create login
Validation: Education Project membership validated,
must be able to connecty on EIS
must be able to find changes form a given cws
To validate :0.2
be easy downloading the sources
use cvs/svn and create/apply/reverse diffs
configure the build (one OS )
Validation:
Be able to checout
successfull configure
can start a build
To validate :0.3
first OpenOffice.org build (in autonomy)
build one module using symbols
run a installset, and start tracing the module
Validation:
with a prof, provide a commented trace,
answers questions
be able to describe a stack, extract values, set values
To validate :0.4
analyse the attached issue,
isolate the concerned code
propose a technical analyse of the issue as specification
Validation :
presentation during a project review ( as IRC meeting or better if possible)
To validate : 0.5
propose possible solutions as fixes
implement a proof of concept
improve specs
propose unit tests
create patches
To validate : 0.6
upload ssh2 key
create tunnel and validate
Validation : checkout sources, and issue closed
To validate : 0.7
request the Domain developer
validate the commit passport <- create a dedicated exam ?
commit the fixes
Validation :
commit passport validated
good quality commits
able to manage basics operations with cws using tunnel
To validate 0.8
improve the solution,
manage code cleanup
Validation:
cws content approved by follower and mentor
specs approved
To validate : 0.9
QA o the cws
follows the QA
cws management : targets, issues verified ..etc
proceed QA tests
To validate : 1.0
code integrated
specs finalization
Validation by the followers, and welcome boy ! Other parallel skills to be validated: autonomy, creativity, integration in the team
What a program !!

Call for donation for Education and Mac OS X porting projects

Several OpenOffice.org Projects have no or very limited resources. e.g.
Mac OS X Aqua port and
Education Project (still incubator project). But to continue the effort, like mentor students writing code for OpenOffice.org project, help developers attending conferences, or pay them expensive memberships for development (like Apple ADC, or iPhone SDK ), or even pay one skilled developer to write some new feature, they need a bit of money.
EducOO.org is a french association (non profit) who aims to help
OpenOffice.org Education Project, or other OpenOffice.org Project like the
Mac OS X port, but not only.
This association is there to receive legally money from donators, for a lot of reasons, like help the developers to write missing features, attend conferences, or buy machines and even more.
If you want to support both Mac OS X and Education Project,
you can simply donate.
Thank you very much !Further information :

News from Education Project
Pierre Pasteau and
Rakesh Pandit have seen their rights granted (thanks to
Martin Holmichell, Louis Suarez Potts and Stefan Taxhet who have accepted the requests). This means Pierre and Rakesh can now create their own cws's, commit code using tunnel, and ask to a confirmed developer to validate their code. Like all other OpenOffice.org developers. If you join
#education.openoffice.org channel (IRC server is irc.freenode.net), their IRC nicknames are (respectively)
pierrep and
chacha_chaudhry.
This means too, the
Education Project now counts 2 new Domain developers ! Other tasks in progress :
This morning, I was invited to
Valentin Janiaut presentation. The topic was about his task : Image Capture Implementation on Mac OS X. Was a very interesting presentation, and Valentin did big progress, and presented several possibilities.
Valentin is yet another student involved in
Education Project Effort, and no doubt, he will soon propose code.
From my side, still playing with OpenGL, I tested FLipView, and I have some ideas for the future. If you don't understand what means FlipView, you can have a look at the video ( ugly, but we see what happens) I put there
OpenGL FlipView .(tested ok using VLC under Linux and Mac OS X)

Education Project effort: a point on the work in progress

Several applications are started.
First application:
Pierre Pasteau to replace mozilla 1.7.5 sources, with seamonkey 1.1.11 source
Today was the first project review. Attendees : Franck Schonheit, Pierre Pasteau, me.
The log of the review Looking at the agenda, Pierre confirmed there is no delay, and we can start building OpenOffice.org using the new patch he created on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX.
Frank proposed to ask Martin Hollmichel for Pierre commit rights, thus he will be able to commit his own changes directly, and discover for true the real OpenOffice.org scheduling process. Always glad to see new volunteers joining the project :-)
2nd application, does concern
Valentin Janiaut: Image capture implementation on Mac OS X.
More precise description of the need, first try in progress. We need to describe more about the Image Capture available API
Rakesh Pandit started to work in starmath. Project review for current status has to be scheduled. More information to come this week about the starmath issue.
Don't forget, verybody, willing to help us, can join the effort, and will be warmly welcomed!

Little ClassRoom about warnings

Today, and because of the proximity of the holidays, we did a little ClassRoom with Rakesh, about the current effort
wae4binfilter.
The origin of the effort, what sorts of warnings we can encounter, and how solve them, and retain the lesson for the future code we'll write.
The log, including several relevant links, is available =>

Education Project 8 months after ...
8 months already, since
Luis Suarez Potts invited me to join Education Project. Like
Sankarshan suggested me, it's time to present some figures.
So, what's new ?
A) Membership The Education Project now counts
64 members (was 13 members 8 months ago), counts two mailing lists, the most active is the dev@education.openoffice.org
B)ActivityB1) IRC channel (
#education.openoffice.org,
irc.freenode.net )
Very active people are
Rakesh Pandit,
Pierre Pasteau,
Andreas Mantke (from Portable OpenOffice.org),
Raphael Bircher (from de project). Other regular contributors are
Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay,
Valentin Janiaut,
Cedric Bosdonnat,
Stephane Bonhomme ... etc
B2) French side
On the francophone side, we have a lot of very active contributors, like
Nicolas Jeudy, Fred Diaz, Fred Ollivier, Remi Boulle, Mathieu Lalanne, Guy Veyssiere, Francois Beuraud, .. and a lot of other.
B3) on the Wiki
- improved
Education Project Wiki page - we propose several applications for students. See:
the effort-
ClassRooms : dedicated development topics are being discussed on IRC, and logs are collected, for an asynchronous use. IRC is the most simple compromise for people who don't have a reliable network.
We used intensively the wiki, and are proud to say that great Sun developers like
Philipp Lohmann and
Mathias Bauer, or
Christian Lohmaier, a volunteer, extremely precious for the OpenOffice.org Community, contributed.
C) Working with studentsCurrently, there are several applications where students are involved.
We cannot start with complicated applications, because we decided to create progressive documentation.
As example, OpenOffice.org Education Project created -sort of- partnership with Epitech ( Paris, France). A student from Epitech,
Pierre Pasteau, started a 6 month application (until end december 2008). 3 tasks will be proposed. In meantime,
Franck Schonheit , proposed to help. Very kind from him.
-
migrate mozilla 1.7.5 to seamonkey 1.1.x As you can see, we try to define objective to be validated for every application. We try to log everything for the community, thus next student will be able to select what they need to solve their next problems
-
make the uno-skeletonmaker tool templatable (application proposed by
Cedric Bosdonnat)
+ a 3rd task, e.g. fixing a starmath bug, with
Thomas Lange help.
Other remarkable contribution from
Rakesh Pandit, who is a regular contributor, sending patches and working hard. We worked on wae4binfilter01 together (close to complete), and we will continue for wae4binfilter some times.
The main objective of Rakesh, is to contribute for
starmath tasks (like issue 972 I didn't manage to work on yet, due to lack of free time )
D) Improved resourcesTo find resources more easely, an association has been created, called
EducOOo. The idea is to be able to receive donations and contributions
legaly.
To avoid mistakes, we asked
Noel Debarle, from
Sesamath, to join the EducOOo association Council, and help us.
E) VisibilityEducation Project was present at the following events :
-
Solution Linux Expo (Paris France),
- FOSDEM 2008 (Bruxelles, Belgie),
- Live eTic (Montpellier, France),
- RMLL 2008 (Mont de Marsan France),
- GoOOCon2008 (Prague Czech Rep.),
- Rencontres de l'Orme (Marseille, France),
- Salon des Ressources Educatives (Besancon , France)Last but not least,
Louis Suarez Potts will represent us at
OOoCon 2008 (Beiijin, China)Thanks to all the people who made this possible !!
France only (but other countries can copy easely).
During RMML ( Mont de Marsan, France), we created a group of Associations around Education, like GNU Edu Ofset ( http://www.ofset.org/it ), Kolekti ( http://www.kolekti.org/ ), Edulibre (http://www.edulibre.org/ ), and some other. The idea is to work and help us together. An important event is scheduled in september, and I'll post further information asap.
Of course, to avoid misunderstanding, we only work for pedagogical content, and redirect everything about OpenOffice.org use to fr.openoffice.org project.
Top 5 of the todo :1)
Find more resources Improve the Team : We need you !!
Other possibility : donations are welcome : we can provide our IBAN on demand
2)
improve the practice wiki pageWe certainly can improve the efficiency of the content. The task is open, and any feedback is welcome :)
3)
improve the synergy with Sun devs Obviously, something is happening about Education, but there is no coordination with Education Project. I trust Louis to find the best solution soon :)
4)
Improve the Education Project visibility through local regional contactsSeveral actions should be scheduled, like improve the mailing list activity, organize events in some schools or important official events .. and so on
5)
Improve our websiteThis is work in progress. Thanks to
Raphael Bircher/, who did a nice work.
=> to be continued :)
As you can see, this is an extremely promising project and we any contributor is welcome.
Thanks a lot to all, and let's continue !""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
